Zoo Photography Workshops

Course of events

We meet in front of the main gate at the Zoo Frankfurt and enter the zoo together at the planned start time of the designated event. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes before the workshop begins. Your Zoo admission ticket* will be purchased prior to the scheduled event to prevent long waiting times. The ticket cannot be refunded if you are late. Various aspects of photo composition and photography, especially for zoo photography, will be discussed.

Skill level

All events are open to all photographers who are interested in expanding their photography skills.

Camera required

Best is a system or SLR camera with interchangeable lenses, where ISO, aperture and shutter speed can be set manually (if you have a camera manual, please bring it with you).

This workshop includes: control of exposure and depth of field, sharpness and blurring, photographying through fences and glass, animal behavior and photo composition.

What to bring

Camera, fully loaded battery, empty memory card.
A telephoto- or zoom- lens capable of 250 mm or better is recommended. (more is better)
A tripod or monopod is recommended.

Additional information

A short lunch break is planned. There will be a snack at the zoo (lunch price is not included in the workshop price).

Exotic Bird Photography

The "Faust-Vogelhallen" offers a great variety of more than 40 exotic birds. Some of the birds live in glass habitats, others can be found in indoor and outdoor free flying aviaries. Photographing these birds can be challenging. Many of the birds are quite small and move fast. Their habitats are often poorly lit.

What to bring

Camera, fully loaded battery, empty memory card.
Prime lenses or a zoom lens with a focal length of at least 50 mm to 200 mm. (more is better)
A tripod or monopod is recommended.

Additional information

In the winter months, condensation due to temperature differences between the outside and inside environments may occur on your camera and lenses. To prevent this, it is essential that you keep your equipment warm and covered until entering the indoor habitats.

Animal Portrait Photography

In this workshop I will show you my techniques for creating breathtaking animal portraits. The animals in the "Zoo Frankfurt" are used to humans and therefore no longer shy, which offers us numerous possibilities to photograph them in natural and sometimes unnatural poses. The course includes instructions for optimal camera settings and photo composition.

Reptiles & Fish Photography

One of the wonderful things about reptiles is that they have an amazing texture and pattern in their skin. Tropical fish can be very colorful. The "Exotarium" offers the photographer a large selection of fish, amphibians, reptiles and insects. This workshop covers topics such as: optimal camera settings, low-light photography, photography through glass, and photo composition.

What to bring

Camera, fully loaded battery, empty memory card.
A prime or zoom lens with a focal length of at least 200 mm.
A polarizing filter and magnifying filters may be usefull.
Because of the confined space, a tripod is not recommended.

Apes & Baboon Photography

Monkeys and baboons are fun subjects to photograph and can be the subject of some amazing portraits. This workshop covers all aspects required to photograph apes and baboons, including: what camera settings are required, how to photograph through glass, how to photograph in low light, and how to compose your photos for stunning results. We start our workshop with the photography of gorillas, bonobos and orang-utans in the "Borgori-Wald" and end with the photography of spider monkeys and baboons.

What to bring

Camera, fully loaded battery, empty memory card.
A zoom lens (50 mm to 300 mm or better).
Because of the combined space, a tripod is not recommended.
